Pop Culture & The Meaning of Life

eduClaytion’s Angels

Some of you know about a couple of very important women in my life–Kate Beckinsale and Emily Blunt. By “in my life” I mean they have no idea who I am.

Well, it’s Underworld weekend, and I am going to see the film ASAP. My friend should be here any minute. I’ve been waiting for, oh, two and half years. I feel that now is a good time to give some other ladies a bit of attention before I see Kate as the lovely death dealer she is and promptly forget about everyone else for a long time.

While I never intended to hurt anybody with so much Beckinsale adoration it’s come to my attention* that I may have been hurtful to my other three favorite actresses who round out the eduClaytion top 5, a prestigious list often whispered about during Hollywood soirees and such.

I don’t have some ranking system from 1-5 or anything because I don’t think it’s appropriate to objectify chicks and stuff. But I will say that Kate and Emily are on top. Here are my three other favorite actresses.

Diane Kruger

Diane has always brought something a little different to my list, mostly being blonde.

We first met back in 2004, the year she soared into stardom with her roles in Troy and National Treasure, two of my favorite movies of the decade. Who else could play the role of Helen, the face that launched a thousand ships? It’s funny to think about now, but I even went and saw Wicker Park for her that same year. Oh how we still laugh about that.

The so-so Copying Beethoven had to hold us over until Kruger reprised her role as Abigail Chase in National Treasure 2. Kruger was already firmly entrenched on my list before she went full smite on me with Inglourious Basterds in 2009 and then added Unknown in 2011 for good measure.

Like I say, I don’t rank women, but she comes in third.

Angelina Jolie

I’m sure the recent ascension of Emily Blunt has been especially hard on Jolie or “Ang” as I like to call her. After all, we’ve been together now for over a decade, long enough at least that the paparazzi doesn’t make waves over us anymore these days. No woman has ever stayed on my list longer than AJ.

Many gems to pick from. The Bone Collector, Tomb Raider, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and just when I thought the AJ train might be slowing down she goes and drops SALT on us. To that I say number four.

Yvonne Strahovski

We have a newcomer. It’s time for Yvonne Strahovski to take her place on my list. If you don’t know, she plays Sarah Walker in the fab TV show Chuck. The only thing missing from the Aussie’s repertoire so far has been movie roles. Then she got herself into a recent film called Killer Elite starring Jason Statham and the one and only Robert DeNiro.

Now I understand that my Australian mate Christian is going to say that he saw Yvonne first and has nationality dibs or something. Well, she’s only #5 on my list so I’m only claiming American dibs.

~*~*~*~

Some of you might be thinking that my list is shallow and this is somehow all about looks. Not true. There’s a million beauties out there who I wouldn’t share my Skittles with. These ladies are certainly beautiful but they also can act and pick roles in multiple movies I like. And they often can kick some serious booty.

Diane Kruger was missing the gritty girl stuff until Basterds came out. Angelina’s always had it and still crushed it in Salt last year. I liked Kate Beckinsale in Serendipity and she’s the only reason to really watch Pearl Harbor, but when she went Underworld on me the universe shifted.

God help me if Emily Blunt ever goes in that direction. If she starts killing zombies or something I’m liable to go into circulatory shock.

Who is your favorite actress?

*I imagined it.

  1. Really, Clayford, this list is inspiring.

I love Sandra Bullock, Kristen Bell, and Emma Stone to name a few. I want to be their BFFs. Im totally convinced they’d think so too if our paths ever crossed.

    • I know they’re gonna love you. Maybe they’ll visit your house soon.

  2. I can think of more than 10 ways to respond to your list, which I suspect will grow as time passes.

    But enough preambling.

To be fair to the “chicks”, are you going to do a “Top 5 Actor” post? Let me know if you need help with entries. 🙂

    That is all. Maybe.

    • I’ve already done 10 Movie Characters I’ve Wished I Could Be (http://educlaytion.com/2011/08/29/movie-characters/), but to be fair I should do a top 5 list of best actors. After all, I think I owe it to the world. So it shall be written. Probably.

    • Leanne,

I saw “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” with your man Colin in it this weekend. Have you seen it yet? All I can say is *solemn head shake* …

Comment by Christian Emmett | January 25, 2012 | Reply

      • Solemn head shake?

I have yet to see it, but it’s up there on my to-see list (with Moneyball — Aaron Sorkin wrote the screenplay! And Coriolanus). I’m waiting till I can be alone in a room with the movie and Master Firth, so it looks like I have to book out a theatre or wait for wider release…

(Clay: if you’re reading this, I’ll translate. Theatre = theater).

        • Since you haven’t seen the movie yet, I can’t elaborate without spoiling everything. You’ll understand when you do sit down and watch though.

  3. Clay, I’m good with 3, 4, and 5. Kate’s top 10, but not sure about Emily yet.

Elizabeth Banks, Amy Adams, Eva Mendes, and Charlize Theron would be in the top 10 as well. All fine actresses.

My all-time favorite: Grace Kelly – To Catch a Thief, The Country Girl

    • Hi MJ. Eva Mendes is just kinda meh for me. Something about her annoys me. I’ve never been much of a Banks fan. Amy Adams rocked the Muppets and Theron is always good.

  4. Well, it’s so hard for me to pick (as I’m more into guys), but these are the women who might make me want to play for the other side, in no particular order:

Lucy Lawless, Gina Torres, Zoe Saldana, Lucy Liu, Milla Jovovich, Olivia Wilde (you can see I prefer the kick-ass chicks, right?) No Reese Witherspoon or Jessica Biel for me, thank you.

I’ve also been told I sort of resemble Ms. Lawless…at least when I do Xena cosplays.

    • Well it’s not just about attraction ya know. I saw Underworld last night. A-mazing. I keep thinking of how few people there are that can play that role and still do drama and Rom-coms. Kate is special.

  5. Let me suggest Gina Carano. She’s the former MMA fighter and American Gladiator who’s in Steven Soderbergh’s new movie, Haywire.

Comment by Todd Pack | January 21, 2012 | Reply

    • I’ve heard of Haywire, but that’s about it. Does she have acting chops?

      Comment by educlaytion | January 22, 2012 | Reply

      • No, but she could snap you like a popsicle stick.

Comment by Todd Pack | January 23, 2012 | Reply

  6. I believe Angelina Jolie might be the most amazingly attractive woman ever. That is all.

Comment by Amanda Rudd | January 22, 2012 | Reply

    • Yes, there is that. I guess I didn’t notice what she looked like.

      Comment by educlaytion | January 22, 2012 | Reply

      • Lol!

  7. I agree that Kate Beckinsale is about as good as it gets. And when it comes to chick action flicks, Ang is #1.

I have to throw Tina Fey and Amy Poehler into the mix. Do you watch Parks and Recreation? The episode a couple weeks ago where they were walking across the ice rink may have been the hardest I have ever laughed at a television show.

And I will definitely miss Yvonne after the 2hr finale next week. I hate to see Chuck go, but I think it is probably time.

Comment by Scott Moore | January 22, 2012 | Reply

    • Hi Scott, sorry for delay in responding. I don’t watch Parks & Rec. I know Tarver likes it. I am down to watching two shows and try to avoid checking anything new out. Except I just made the mistake of watching the 1st episode of Lost on Netflix, so now I might have to watch the next 99. I’ve missed this entire season of Chuck and my friend and I are planning on DVDs later this year.

  8. I was just at Sundance and so was Emily Blunt. I didn’t see her or her movie but I’m pretty sure this means we are now best friends. (Everyone I talked to who saw it loved it but did not mention Zombies.)

    Comment by Marianne | January 23, 2012 | Reply

    • SO jealous. Did you at least leave notes around the town for her to contact me?

      Comment by educlaytion | January 24, 2012 | Reply

  9. Although I’m sort of “anti-Angelina”, I have to agree with you on Kate Beckinsale…she’s amazing. She’s probably my favourite actress. She’s beautiful and talented and does her own stunts…so impressive!

    • My sister was saying that before the Underworld movies Kate had never even thrown a punch. She’s unbelievable.

      Comment by educlaytion | January 24, 2012 | Reply

  10. Thanks for the shout out Clay, I’ll definitely claim nationality dibs on Yvonne! 😉

Kate Beckinsale is pretty great in Underworld; I have to see the new movie when it’s released here tomorrow!

My action-babe list goes something like this:

    1. Yvonne Strahovski – I know I don’t need to explain that one. Sarah Walker (like all the characters in Chuck, IMO) has been excellently written and is perfectly portrayed.
    2. Milla Jovovich – I can’t go past the Resident Evil series, and Milla has been brilliant as Alice and I loved her in The Fifth Element as well.
    3. Jessica Biel – I’ve been a fan of hers for years (I even bought Stealth just because she was in it – it wasn’t fantastic) but I absolutely loved her in Blade Trinity.
    4. Carrie Fisher – Dude, Princess Leia. Leader of the Rebel Alliance. Survived multiple run-ins with DARTH VADER and killed that big ugly toad Jabba-The-Hutt! If that’s not enough, I can always mention the metal bikini. 😉
    5. Noomi Rapace – She grabbed my attention while watching “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” series and seeing the new Sherlock Holmes movie just sucked me right in.

Just quietly, did you see that they’re remaking Total Recall (well, they’re finishing up a movie of the same title that is pretty much a remake) that will star both Kate and Jessica Biel? I like the sound of that; even if the movie itself might not be great…

AND, I have taken a shine to Michelle Dockery since seeing Hogfather this year.

    Awesome post my friend!

Comment by Christian Emmett | January 25, 2012 | Reply

    • Ah, Jessica Biel. If anyone is not on this list who should be it’s her. She does it all too. I’m not even sure why I don’t include her yet because I’m a fan. Blade Trinity, Chuck and Larry, The A-Team. So good.

  11. […] full disclosure: The movie stars a certain actress named Emily Blunt who I may or may not have mentioned a couple times*. But I’m not here to blather and blush […]

  12. From the little I know of these ladies, they’re beautiful inside and out. Your Skittles line had me laughing… For some reason really pictured you denying a lovely, but mean, woman confectionaries.
