What Does A Terrorist Look Like?
How do you feel about profiling terrorists? After flying to Florida via Philadelphia yesterday, my son made an interesting statement. “I thought that guy sitting across from me was a terrorist,” he said. Good thing the ACLU
didn’t hear him.
Kids don’t know about political correctness. Many persnickety people would scold a child who observed the common appearances of people who commit acts of terror. I am not persnickety. In fact, even though he made the comment long after the flight, I knew exactly which passenger my boy meant. I had considered the same thing.
According to some folks, that makes me a bigot of some kind. I guess I am. I am morally opposed to terrorists and really struggle with that whole “love your enemies” command when it comes to those who wish to murder me, my family, and my country. I think they’re terrible humans and the world is better off with them dead. Forget water boarding by the way, chop off their fingers and toes one by one if such torture will result in information that will prevent future attacks and save American lives.
So I guess the part that makes me terrible is looking at a person of Middle Eastern descent and pondering whether or not he’s a terrorist. Yes, I said he. I have never looked at a Middle Eastern woman, child, or senior citizen and thought the same thing. I don’t assume these men are planning to kill me; I just pause to consider it. Especially when I’m on a plane and have been selected by a flight attendant to sit next to the emergency door over the wing in case we have to evacuate the passengers.
So do I think that all Muslim men are terrorists? Of course not. I just recognize that all the terrorist attacks over the past twenty years have been carried out by Islam extremists. To those of you who like to search old ladies at the airport, calm down. I also get leery of anyone throwing off a Timothy McVeigh vibe. I understand the Fourth Amendment protects folks from unreasonable search and seizure. Define unreasonable. America is unreasonable by coddling killers and offering constitutional rights to people who aren’t citizens under that document.
We can all take off our shoes and belts in security lines without messing up our schedules. You may know that you’re not a terrorist, but security officials do not. Anybody–white, black, female, old–can be recruited because they’re not obvious, but let’s not pretend that certain people aren’t much more likely to represent a threat.
My kid didn’t need to have conversations about racial profiling or indoctrination from me or a teacher to recognize the obvious. Terrorists usually look the same. There is nothing wrong with using your brain to recognize that basic fact.
What do you think?

Interesting post. While I think it’s unfair to look at any individual Middle Eastern man and think “terrorist,” I have no problem at all with airport security personnel paying more attention to Ahmed with a Hamas t-shirt than little old Mrs. Robinson. You may find this post interesting, new on 2BB today:

Hmmm…this made me think. If I was sitting at any airport in the Middle East waiting for a flight, with my baseball cap on; wouldn’t there be thousands of eyes checking me out? I think profiling goes on everywhere. So why should we as “Americans” feel as though it’s such an terrible thing?
The problem is American leaders who believe this country is terrible or evil or at least worse than everyone else. That’s why (to them) it doesn’t matter what other countries do because we owe everyone more since we have been so terrible for so long. I would never question these leader’s patriotism, but, oh wait, I absolutely question their patriotism. Maybe they should prove themselves as much as Ahmed.
wow. so if my father and i were on a plane with some asshole of a white american my father would have to wait to be unfairly interrogated and searched just because he looks middle eastern? and just to let you know all terrorists attacks aren’t committed by islamists much less middle easterners, the one bomb attack in oklahoma was committed by a white american. so get your facts straight and if you unfairly treat us middle easterners than I really won’t have a problem with another attack that’s similar to the 9-11 attacks.
Okay, so I’m sensing some anger here. First of all, I don’t know your father, but I’m sure he’s a great guy. Unless he’s not. Second, I think we should all be willing to be searched as I stated in the article. Yes, maybe some people do look like the profile of a threat. That’s the point of the piece. Nothing personal, I’m just pointing out the obvious. What was your next point? Oh yeah, sometimes white people are terrorists too. You are right. That’s why A) I mentioned that in my article (Timothy McVeigh) and B) White people who look suspicious should be searched, detained, whatevered. As a white guy who has traveled alone quite often, I can tell you they do their job with me. Also, white people who commit acts of terrorism should be A) tortured and interrogated and B) Killed when we’re done with them.
So don’t pick on me and my facts. We’re both straight. Now, as far as me personally treating anyone unfairly, I don’t believe in that regardless of any factor, race and all.
As for your final statement, let me get this straight. YOU don’t have a problem with another 9/11 for, wait I forget everything else you said after YOU don’t have a problem with another 9/11! Am I supposed to be okay with you saying that because, after all, you’re middle eastern. See, I don’t think you are screwed up for being middle eastern. You are screwed up because you would be okay with another 9/11.
“i’m sure he’s a great guy… Unless he’s not.” Thats awesome lol
for anyone to say that they are okay with another 9-11 is truly an evil statement. whoever says that is buying into the crap that media promotes. that statement is made from pure, raw (hate) emotion. its almost funny (not really) that the same evil that is projected on a group of people is being reciprocated, 2 wrongs will NEVER MAKE A RIGHT. as far as airport security, i’m a white dude who does some traveling, i am pretty tattoed up and kinda stick out in a crowd. i have been held up at airport security, is it because i am not the most conventional looking, maybe. but tsa is doing the job they are paid for. i get odd looks all the time, but i’m not crying about it. that is the loss of others who judge me.
to be o.k. with another 9-11 is appalling! i have unconventional theories about what really is the brain behind 9-11, but seriously, innocent people lost thier lives for ideals that they had nothing to do with. again, LOTS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE DIED for B.S.!!! don’t keep breeding that hate my friend, its dangerous! try clearing your brain of all that hate and read the article again, maybe you’ll learn something.

I’m going to make this short because I’m typing this from my phone. One this was a great article, well done sir…and two that “9/11 can happen again I don’t care comment” might be the most uneducated response I’ve heard in along time. As far as profiling goes, I personally, because of my background, profile EVERYBODY, now it’s what I do with those thoughts that would make or turn me into a so called bigot or not. Actually I was profiled and selectively searched more when I was in the military flying to or from base by TSA than ever before. And they knew I was military by of course the haircut and by two checking in using my military ID, yet they still gave me the “special” treatment…TSA IS DOING THEIR JOB. Now, as doing what I do now and going where I have been, I’ve been through SEVERAL foreign airports and I’ve been on the other side of the “all seeing eye” and have been stared at until I’m out of sight. It doesn’t bother me, they don’t know what I do or who I’m with or why I’m there, they just see that I stick out from THE NORM. And just a little intel for anyone who reads this, most suicide bombers, not all though, but most have a very strong odor to them, like as if they just took a bath in cheap perfume. It’s sort of a last step cleansing thing before “suiting up”. Like I stated, it’s not all, but just like all these articles here, it’s some education or CLAYtion (to go with the theme) that helps us make rational, informed decisions.
Thanks for the thoughts and for your service. The world never stops changing, but sometimes we’re told that common sense is offensive. We need to continue to educate ourselves. As I always say, bigotry is a combination of fear and ignorance, and ignorance is much easier to overcome than fear.
My kid loves Iron Maiden. So do I. Unlike you, I don’t assume that there is no connection. He probably gets it from me.
Me–I try to teach my kids to fear _actual_ threats, like crossing the street or riding without a helmet, as opposed to instilling an unreasonable fear of people of “middle eastern descent” on the infintessimal chance that he will be killed in a terrorist attack.
And no, I don’t think you’re a bigot. We’re all bound by our prejudices to some extent, whether we like it or not. I just think you are irrationally frightened. Given the hysteric tone of cable news programs these day, that’s almost understandable. Cheers.
Thanks for your thoughts. I’m not sure if you are addressing these comments at me or another commentator because they don’t really fit anything I said in this article or subsequent comments. I’m not clear on how the Iron Maiden statement connects because I wasn’t aware I assumed no connection between our tastes and those of our kids. Of course, you are wise to teach your kids about real threats, so I agree with you there. As I said in the article, my boy’s statement came out of nowhere. We had never had that discussion, and his comment struck me enough to jot down these thoughts, but the moment didn’t interrupt life for a moment.
I guess I don’t understand where you sense fear in this writing, irrational or any other kind. I was just throwing out questions about our awareness in the 21st century. I’m at peace with life or death and thanks to living in this country and being defended by the amazing men & women of our armed forces I rarely have to even think about terrorism. I don’t have cable either, so those news programs are off my radar. Thanks for checking in. I would love to hear some more of your feedback on this or other topics.
I believe that there really are evil people of all races and genders in our country who appear to be “old Mrs. Robinson” and good ‘ol Charlie types. There are a lot of angry Americans as well as non-Americans who will go great lengths to cast their evil on crowds of innocent people just for the mission that their sick minds conjure up as an opportunity to set it straight once and for all. There is no one definitive means to pick them out of a crowd for each person presents differently when embarking on such evil acts.
